Bull Chief

Among the many historic photographs at which I’ve stared over the years, this fabulous one of Bull Chief ranks near the top. Born about 1825 and hailed widely for his bravery and wisdom, Bull Chief and his fellow Apsaroke tribe members ranged across the region that later became Montana and Wyoming.

Probably made in the early 1900’s, this portrait was taken by that avid photographic chronicler of the once-wild American West, Edward S. Curtis.
